Lifeguards have the best job!

Going through High School and College, I found the best job… lifeguarding. Now a lot of people think of a lifeguard as the crispy critter who is getting baked by the sun all day, but quite contrary, lifeguarding skills have helped me throughout my life in coping with many issues. Over the years, I have gotten to know many lifeguards who have gone on to become school teachers, surgeons, financial company owners, carpenters, attorneys, dentists, engineers, public officers, musicians, etc, etc, etc. I think what all of them will tell you is that lifeguarding is much more than sitting in a chair getting crispy… quite the contrary, it is important for lifeguards to protect themselves from the sun.
What I found most fun about the job of lifeguarding was the opportunity to meet new people. Around an aquatic facility, everyone is having fun. I guess it could be fun hanging out inside in the air conditioning when it is hot outside, but it is more fun, and certainly more active to be at a pool cooling off. Swimming is also great exercise. Lifeguards are often also required to make sure that the pool is clean and ready for patrons to enjoy themselves, which leads to knowing some water chemistry, proper cleaning, and while it may not even happen in a persons career as a lifeguard, I can tell you that there is no greater experience than knowing that you may have saved someone else life. I always tell the lifeguards “when in doubt, pull them out”, but there is no doubt that in a few instances that I can remember, that had I not been there, the person would’ve drown. So next time you see a lifeguard, just as you would a fireman or policeman, commend them on a job well done.
